photo credit: digika When one begins self hypnosis training the realization that it is not an end in itself will eventually emerge. It’s like discovering an iceberg. The more one studies the tip, the more is learned about what is below water. And then more and more.
Each segment of the iceberg may be a marvel in itself, but just looking at the individual segments will give a false impression of the whole iceberg. And since most of it is not visible at any one time, there’s no way one can see the complete iceberg.
So it is with most self hypnosis training. It seems very simple at first. All one has to do is listen to a hypnosis tape or CD. And then another after another.
One can spend weeks, months and yes, even years, along with many hundreds of dollars going thru the multitude of hypnosis resources found online. So at the end, without any structure and continuity, all one has is a stack of tapes and CD’s. Yep, several were helpful, many were useless, and no complete picture is formed.
Improvement or change may have taken place, but the total desired effect has not occurred.
So, what is the answer? To be totally effective, a program must be used which is a complete system. One which takes all the pieces and puts them into the proper slot, rather than offering hundreds of individual tapes or CDs.
This program should have three steps included in each session regardless of the induction or technique used or the session goal. The stages are referred to as “ABS”.
You guessed it. The “A” stands for Attention. One must become totally focused on the subject at hand and completely unaware of any other distractions or thoughts.
“B” is Bypassing. Bypassing what? The critical mind. Why is this important? The natural thing for one to do is question and analyze everything. If this occurs in self hypnosis [or any kind of hypnosis] progress cannot be made.
“S” if for Stimulate. The unconscious mind must be stimulated to accept the suggestions for processing. This is the key to making change.
Stages “A” and “B” must be accomplished in order for “S” to have a chance.
Without “S”, nothing takes place. All three stages must be present, in order, in EVERY session, regardless of which book, tape, CD or tool used for the hypnosis session.
One should also look for a training which includes the 5 steps of hypnosis unless very experienced in the art. The 5 steps will guide one thru the necessary steps to complete a hypnotic session successfully. As one becomes more advanced, some of the steps can be eliminated.

According to experts, stress develops when a person feels the task in front of him is greater than the resources he can summon. This imbalance triggers stress. Hypnosis, however, changes this. Through hypnosis, this person can feel that he has all the resources necessary to do the task efficiently.
Dr. Lipton has researched the topic and found that stress is an underlying factor in as much as 90% of diseases. NLP or it’s full name; Neuro-Linguistic-Programming as been around for a long time, but has only been used productively in the past few years. Research has found that we tend to replay the problem in our minds over and over again until we cannot differentiate between past and present. What might have happened to us in the past has somehow jumped into our present in a very real and frightening way. Hence the anxiousness and sweaty palms and even heart palpitations manifest at the slightest recall.
Let’s briefly look at a case study recently brought to the fore:
Janet is a 40 year old mother of two and wonderfully happy. Her husband as a great job and her children are excelling at school. Janet has just one problem though, she cannot drive a car. You see her her little brother died in a car crash when she was also just a toddler, and seems to think that she will also die if she drives car.
She has made all kinds of excuses not to drive throughout her life and depended on her husband, family members and friends to fetch the children from school and drive her to do her errands.
At the beginning of the session she was asked to relax and do some breathing exercises. When she felt totally relaxed the therapist instructed her to visualize a cinema with a comfortable seats, a big screen, lots of popcorn and candy around her and that she is going to star in a fantastic movie. This movie is going to be about her trauma and it will be in lots of detail. She also had to make her movie in black and white so the mind can relate to the old problem. She was then asked to start the movie with her first memory of the accident.
Janet was asked to imagine herself in a cinema or big room where she was able to watch a movie playing on a big screen. She was then asked to leave her seat and stand somewhere where she could observe herself watching her movie. The movie would be about her fear or phobia. She was also asked to imagine her movie be in black and white to give it a dated look. She was then told to let her imagination play along and create the scene where she became horrified or scared. While she was watching her movie, she was also watching herself and noting her reactions.
Now that she is standing away from her movie and not playing in it, she was asked to slowly change aspects of the movie as it happened. It was suggested that she maybe change the black white into technicolor, and also to add her favorite song to it. Every time she would do this, she would rewind the movie and place an object in it. She could change anything in the movie as long as it is positive and rewind it has many times as she wished.
She ended up with a yellow beach buggy that blared a popular song by the Beach Boys. Her fear was eliminated and replaced with the nlp rewind technique and she is now confident behind the wheel, so much so that she is hardly home any more!

However, there are actually lots of self-hypnosis techniques that people can learn and apply to themselves. While one must be careful about what one chooses to program into one’s subconscious, with a little work you can truly become your own “mind manager.”
Emile Coue was one of the earliest proponents of self hypnosis. He believed that at least some problems could be cured or alleviated by a change in our unconscious thought, which could only be achieved by the use of one’s imagination. Coue did not consider himself a healer per se; rather he believed that he could train people to heal themselves by affecting organic changes in themselves through the use of auto suggestion.
Another popular form of self-hypnosis is known as Autogenic Training. It is a relaxation technique developed by Johannes Schultz, a German psychiatrist in the 1920s and 1930s. It involves the practice of 15 minute sessions 3 times a day at morning, noon, and in the evening. During each session the person is supposed to repeat to him or herself a series of visualizations that are designed to induce a state of relaxation, which in turn can alleviate many stress-related and psychosomatic disorders.
Once you establish that you’re going to learn how to hypnotize yourself, you’ll need the right information so as to proceed correctly. The first thing you need to decide is what goal or goals you are actually hoping to accomplish with the hypnosis. Once that is settled, you need to make sure that the suggestions that you are implanting in your subconscious mind are positive in nature. Substitute positive suggestions like “I’m going to quit smoking because it will be so much better for my health.”
One popular self hypnosis technique is to visualize yourself descending into your subconscious as if going down a staircase. With each step you have fewer and fewer worries and are becoming increasingly relaxed. When you get to the end of the staircase you should be sufficiently relaxed to start repeating your positive suggestions to your subconscious. Repeat each suggestion three times with a short break in between. When finished with all your suggestions, imagine yourself going back up the staircase you came down. When you are back at the top of the staircase, the session is over and you should be back to your normal state of mind.

One thing most people are surprised about is that it is easy to learn how to hypnotize someone. Maybe this is because going in and out of hypnosis is pretty natural for everybody. In this article I’ll show you how to hypnotize someone using the permissive method. This means they know you are hypnotizing them, and have agreed to go along with it.
A good thing to get before you start is something they’d like to accomplish while under hypnosis. Maybe a bad habit they’d like to stop, or to do good on an upcoming test, or to simply enjoy twenty or thirty minutes of focused relaxation. Make sure to respect whatever they want to achieve, as it is important to them.
Now you’re ready. Have them relax in any way that will be comfortable for them for twenty or thirty minutes. Sitting down, or sprawled out on a couch, whatever is most comfortable for them. Get them to close their eyes, and take several long, slow, deep breaths. Each time they exhale, tell them they are getting more and more relaxed. (Which they will be anyway, because they are sitting on a couch with their eyes closed!) Tell them they are getting more relaxed with each breath.
Next you can start to get them relaxing their whole body, one body part at a time. Start with their head, then chest, stomach, back, arms, legs etc. Once you get down to their feet, they are ready to go.
When you finish relaxing all their body parts, you can start giving them commands. Make sure your commands
are congruent with what they said they wanted to accomplish under hypnosis. “You stop smoking easily,” or “You always do well on tests, ” or “you are very smart,” or whatever they want. Spend about fifteen minutes during this section. Speak slowly and softly.
After you’ve given them several commands, you can begin to bring them slowly out of their hypnotic state. Usually a slow count from one to five does the trick. Which each number describe them feeling better, more awake, so that when you get to five, they are feeling happy and relaxed and refreshed.
